Reading and Discussion #2
Filmmaking can be very beneficial for teens. Not only are they learning in the classroom but outside of the classroom as well. Allowing the students to take an assignment and make a film instead of just reading about it, gets them more involved and more interested in learning. This benefits the students outside of the classroom as well because they are getting to know their community and the people that surround them. Many of the students can become aware of their environment and the events that are taking place.
This allows for creativity and individuality. A student can show others their beliefs, values, and what is important to them through digital storytelling/ filmmaking. Learning on their own is another benefit. Taking technology and creating a piece of art that they have not created before can take time but while doing this they are learning how to merge it together, record voice, and make photos and words become a story.
Using filmmaking inside the classroom, gives the students the opportunity to use technology for professional uses. They are learning the skills they will need for jobs in the future. Filmmaking can be used with any subject, so this allows for the students to be engaged in what they are learning instead of just reading and writing from a book. The student is being actively hands on.
With all of that being said, filmmaking benefits students in so many ways in and out of the classroom. The students can take what they learn and make it into something more than knowledge, they can make it into a digital story and allow people to see their understanding in a different way.

I really love your statement "they can make it into something more than knowledge..." as well as how you pointed out that filmmaking can fit into ANY subject. As a technology teacher, I find myself doing a lot of activities like this, but it could easily be used to support learning in every subject area. Hopefully this will catch on in many more classrooms, allowing students to learn valuable skills outside of the specific content curricula as you pointed out. It's also a great way for students to connect to the subject matter, make connections across different subjects, and connect to people around the globe.
ReplyDeleteYou also mentioned that it provides students a way to express their values and beliefs. This is a very important concept to me because, as we saw in the TED Talk from last week and read in Neil Postman's excerpt, the corporate controlled media is the vast majority of what we experience on a daily basis. Giving the power to our youth and other people to voice their own opinions, stories, anything really is a valuable way to expose counter-narratives to the public. Enabling people to speak out about realities is far more valuable to our society than for-profit media ever has been or will be.
I love your point of view on technology and how it can be used in schools. They can learn any subject and express themselves in the way they see fit.
