Weekly Reading #9

" But as culture of sexuality keeps reaching down to younger and younger children, parents, teachers, and the general public wonder about media's influence on a young person's sense of personal and social identity." (pg. 105)

" But whether we like it or not, media messages shape peoples beliefs, attitudes and values." (pg. 113)

Media is very powerful for all society. Media sometimes helps us choose what to say, wear, be and follow. Many media messages send off negative vibes while there are very few positive vibes. As every type of media is becoming more available to younger generations, we see more sexuality being based off of media. When I was in high school you seen media have a little impact on the personal and social identity. Now, when I return I see more of it. They see things on the media that they like so they decide that it is now who they are. Media influences all of us in different ways. Some decide that we need to be like certain things, whether it be sexually or not. A lot of things on the media are very sexuality based. I strongly agree that media shapes people in many way. Sometimes we may not see but others we can see where it comes from. We learn from things on media, whether it be online,TV or radio we learn and sometimes we decide that it is a bigger part of us than we wanted it to be in the start. I also think that a lot of people are followers to things in the media. They don't want to be a leader but if they do they first follow something and then try to lead to friends and others around them.

  1. I think the quotes you picked were very important and relevant to us, as teachers, and societal figureheads. Media often impacts children in negative ways, to be sure. But I find myself being very glad of the positive messages that are spread through social media or boards, like pinterest. The inspirational quotes and pictures can really do wonders for the self-esteem and impressional young minds of children. I find myself excited when I see a quote or picture that really hits home for me and I'm very happy to share and spread the positivity. Often we focus on the negatives, I just wanted to mention some positive aspects to make us smile, because that is super important too. Thanks!

  2. These are great quotes Nissa! The first quote is one that gets me everyday. The biggest struggle for me is that I am a male teacher, which means I cannot tell the student to cover themselves because that implies that I was looking and they could get me fired. I just want students to know that they can look beautiful without dressing in that manner. If anyone has ever walked down High Street in Morgantown at night you can see what the quote is talking about in full force, it is to the point where it is taking away from their beauty and they may not realize it. I am not saying to cover everything up like an Eskimo, but to be modest.

  3. Your quotes make me think of an argument I've heard in relation to the increasingly prevalent sexual side of media, which basically states that media is produced to be consumed by an audience. If there is no demand for a certain type of media, then it will not be produced. Does this mean that we as a culture are turning into a people driven by sex and drugs? No, I don't believe so. But I do believe that it is a sign that we are continually taking messages that were previously taboo and inserting them into daily life bit by bit until they blend in with everyday media. I don't find any of it terribly surprising, as media often tends to look for a hook in edgy issues. Throwing something sexual into an ad as a way to get people to look, click, or tune in is a cheap, easy way to get your message out there. As we get more and more "comfortable" with sex in our media messages, the media must produce more and more edgy pieces to produce the same returns. Maybe it is all cyclical? Regardless, you make a good point that there is a heavy influence on youth from media as there is that constant drive to reach more people with media messages. Knowing what those messages are and how they reach teens and children is important in educating students on how to interpret and react to them.

  4. Nissa I to like the quotes you chose.
They say and have a grate deal of meaning behind the statement.

As educators in or out of the classroom we see students go through many phases in the identity of finding out who they are. I find that their personification process is influenced very much by the media. We start our with Seasame Street then onto Cartoon Disney then we move to Cartoon Networks and by this time we have graduated to Anime. So- I guess what I am saying is that yes society is the media groomer for our children.

Young people today invest a great deal of time and effort into their media identity, just look at Facebook and Instagram. Their self imagine is influenced by the the music they hear, the people they hangout with on social media and the shows they watch on tv.

The society norms sell thier sex, music and language to younger and younger kids and we as the parents have to help our children find the positive balance in the medias noise. It is crazy and it gets younger and more advanced all the time.

  5. I agree that media today shapes the way that young people think. Media comes in all types for children today; video games, computers, television. I am often disgusted with some of the things that I see "promoting" these positive images to teens. Shows like Teen Mom and even shows on the Disney Channel today show sex and drugs as being positive things. As a parent, it is very hard to monitor it.
