Weekly Reading 12

1: To help students use their own voices for advocacy & social change.
2: To build students' ability to be active, thoughtful "readers" or interpreters of the media messages in their cultural environment.
3: To develop students' skills in using digital technology tools.
4: To increase student motivation and engagement in the classroom.
5: To promote creativity & self-expression.

"School leaders can inspire educators by helping teachers make large and small steps toward embracing new ideas and instructional practices." (pg. 170).
Teachers are always learning new ways to teach. Learning from more experienced leaders will motivate teachers to try what the leaders are suggesting. I think it is important for leaders to help teachers so that they are not on their own when learning new ideas and instructional practices.

" When teachers infuse digital and media literacy across the curriculum, it requires that educators use texts- including textbooks, newspapers, TV shows, magazines, books, movies, videos, games, and online resources- beyond their function as conveyors of information."( pg. 171)
I think that it is important for digital and media literacy to be used in many subjects. This gives students different ways to learn the information. It also allows students the opportunity to find information from different sources and compare and contrast the two ways they found the information. Also with using media and digital literacy across the curriculum the educators are helping students understand how to read and understand different messages from different media sources. This will be helpful to the students when they are getting older and need to understand the different messages behind the picture.

"When students have opportunities to actively participate in dialogue in the classroom their writing improves."(pg. 175)
I feel this quote is also important. The more practice that students have the better their writing will improve. Also the opportunity will allow the students to ask question and get answers right away instead of going home and not understanding why their words don't sound like they did on their paper as it did in their head. When we write down a sentence like we are talking it doesn't always sound like we want it to. Allowing students time to practice this in the classroom lets them understand the way they are talking isn't always how we want to write our words down that way.
I know that when I write a paper I write it as I am talking but then I have to have someone proof read it because I write like I talk and that is not the proper English to be writing in.

  1. I love that you picked up on teachers are also still learning how to teach. It isn’t something you learn and can keep using the same method. We have to change our lessons to fit new technology, new practices and so much more. I recently went to a conference that opened my eyes to new ways to introduce material to my staff. I hope it will bring new technology into our department as well as opportunities for us to continue to grow. If I have not gone to this conference I would still be doing the same thing instead of trying to innovate what we currently are doing!

  2. Amazing top five! The first quote was my favorite of the three and I strongly agree with it. The leaders of the school are the backbone of the school because they are what can help or hinder teachers in their endeavors.

  3. I enjoyed reading your perspective on this reading. I also agree the the leaders of our schools make or break technology. I am fortunate to work in school where technology is abundant and implemented and other teachers help me learn every day. If I didn't start here i am not sure how comfortable I would be implementing technology.

  4. I enjoyed reading your post. It's true that teachers are also learning. I enjoy going to workshops and gleaning new ideas from other teachers that may or may not have more teaching experience than I do. I follow a lot of teachers on Instagram and Facebook to get ideas for my classroom and for the students that I teach. Great interpretation of the quotes that you picked from the text.
