Final Project Brainstorm!
"Critical media literacy not only teaches students to learn from media, to resist media manipulation, and to use media materials in constructive ways, but is also concerned with developing skills that will help create good citizens and that will make individuals more motivated and competent participants in social life (p.371, D.Kellner and J. Share)."
Using filmmaking inside the classroom, gives the students the opportunity to use technology for professional uses. They are learning the skills they will need for jobs in the future. Filmmaking can be used with any subject, so this allows for the students to be engaged in what they are learning instead of just reading and writing from a book. The student is being actively hands on.
" Today, every teacher needs to be a media composition teacher." (pg. 85)
" But whether we like it or not, media messages shape peoples beliefs, attitudes and values." (pg. 113)
"Many parents and teachers feel like children and young people are the experts when it comes to online media" ( pg. 128)
Finding stories that connect people is newsworthy.
1: To help students use their own voices for advocacy & social change.
2: To build students' ability to be active, thoughtful "readers" or interpreters of the media messages in their cultural environment.
3: To develop students' skills in using digital technology tools.
4: To increase student motivation and engagement in the classroom.
5: To promote creativity & self-expression.
"School leaders can inspire educators by helping teachers make large and small steps toward embracing new ideas and instructional practices." (pg. 170).
These are just a few of the quotes that I will be using in my final project. I think that this will show a great deal of what all is learned throughout this course from August- December. Not only did I learn a lot about digital media, I learned a lot about how to do certain things online that I had no clue how to do before I took this course.

"School leaders can inspire educators by helping teachers make large and small steps toward embracing new ideas and instructional practices." (pg. 170).
Teachers are always learning new ways to teach. Learning from more experienced leaders will motivate teachers to try what the leaders are suggesting. I think it is important for leaders to help teachers so that they are not on their own when learning new ideas and instructional practices.
" When teachers infuse digital and media literacy across the curriculum, it requires that educators use texts- including textbooks, newspapers, TV shows, magazines, books, movies, videos, games, and online resources- beyond their function as conveyors of information."( pg. 171)
I think that it is important for digital and media literacy to be used in many subjects. This gives students different ways to learn the information. It also allows students the opportunity to find information from different sources and compare and contrast the two ways they found the information. Also with using media and digital literacy across the curriculum the educators are helping students understand how to read and understand different messages from different media sources. This will be helpful to the students when they are getting older and need to understand the different messages behind the picture.
"When students have opportunities to actively participate in dialogue in the classroom their writing improves."(pg. 175)
I feel this quote is also important. The more practice that students have the better their writing will improve. Also the opportunity will allow the students to ask question and get answers right away instead of going home and not understanding why their words don't sound like they did on their paper as it did in their head. When we write down a sentence like we are talking it doesn't always sound like we want it to. Allowing students time to practice this in the classroom lets them understand the way they are talking isn't always how we want to write our words down that way.
I know that when I write a paper I write it as I am talking but then I have to have someone proof read it because I write like I talk and that is not the proper English to be writing in.

Finding stories that connect people is newsworthy. It is always not a bunch of news, it is news that people can connect to and keep their attention. This type of news usually comes from journalist. All of the information that Sarah was telling us in the video was very interesting and kept the attention of her audience. Many of the news we hear about today is a lot of business and politics. Some of the news that need to be shared with people get passed by because we don't think to go out and find the stories that connect and inspire people like Sarah and her friends did. I feel having students go out and find something from someone that they connect and are inspired with will motivate students to learn more about how they find news and know what is newsworthy. I think that this will motivate students to learn more about the news if they are ale to find something they can connect with and have an emotional connection to.

Weekly Reading #10 : Life Online
"Many parents and teachers feel like children and young people are the experts when it comes to online media" ( pg. 128)
" But if we acknowledge the human beings who are represented digitally, we must consider the point of view of the subject- the person, event, or experience that is featured" ( pg. 135)
" When you talk about controversial online content with adolescents, you may learn about an online teasing or cyber bullying incident or the posting of an unflattering photo" ( pg.137)
In today's society the child of a family is more up to date with technology. I have heard the saying " They are experts at that technology." This could be because more children today spend more time on phones, computers, iPod, iPad, etc. than being outside and spending time enjoying family company. Also, technology is being given to children at younger ages. You can walk into an elementary classroom as young as third graders and they all are talking about their cell phones or iPad.
When viewing different things online we need to recognize the event, people, and setting that we are viewing. This will better help us to understand the reaction that we should have. Having discussions in class about online content lets your students/children know that you care about what they are finding when they are online. It also lets them know that they are able to talk to you if they find something they think is harmful/ violent. Though some students who find this might not speak up in class they will feel comfortable enough to come talk to you. But the only way they will do this is if you let them know they can trust you. I think this is very important in today's society.

PSA
What is the proposed issue? Describe the problem and why it is important to the public? Are there an statistics involved which might be useful?
- Posting violent or hateful content online. The problem is that so many are being bullied by what is said online to them or about them. Also, a lot of people post word violence all over when they are mad at someone else and want them to know it. They are also able to view websites about violence or self harm. This is important to the public because we need to help those who are being targeted by this whether they are the one posting about it or the one that is targeted by others.
1. Unfortunately, the internet also offers a place where negative and violent emotions can be fostered, such as hate group web sites. http://www.teenviolencestatistics.com/content/internet-violence-and-cyberthreats.html
2.Research has associated exposure to media violence with a variety of physical and mental health problems for children and adolescents, including aggressive and violent behavior, bullying, desensitization to violence, fear, depression, nightmares, and sleep disturbances. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/124/5/1495.full
3. In addition to modeling violent behavior, entertainment media inflate the prevalence of violence in the world, cultivating in viewers the “mean-world” syndrome, a perception of the world as a dangerous place. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/124/5/1495.full
Whom do I want to speak to?
- Parents
What is the proposed message? What do I want the person who is watching this to understand?
- The proposed message is to let parents know that there is a problem with hateful and violent content being posted online by many children/ teens and there are things that parents can do about it. I want the person who is watching this to understand that there is things that can be done to decrease this.
What is the call to action? What do I want the person to do? What can an individual do in the home or community? How will the action solve the problem?
- I want the person to take time to talk to their children about violence and hateful things and ways that it hurts others. I also want them to encourage their children to talk to them about things that are going on online. Be able to allow the children to tell them if they see violence and hateful content being sent. An individual can do many things at home and in the community to help. Have family nights to where they are not online, have community service projects. They could do a community violent watch. Many things can be done there is no limit. This action will help children by giving less time online. And have their minds on something else fun, and enjoyable.

Magazine Cover
For my magazine I first decided on the background color. My color choice comes from fall. The next thing I decided on was the name of the magazine. I chose be first because of when I started college it was always the saying of be first. I feel this title would get someone to read the magazine because they could be the first to read about common core.
They next thing that was chosen for the magazine was the pumpkin. I love pumpkins and wanted it to feel like a fall edition, so I came up with a way to connect the two. This image draws in the reader. I feel that to some educators the common core causes a mess. As we all know those who have been teaching do not like change often. So it disrupts what they are use to and they have to begin again with new guidelines to go by.
The last image I chose to put on my magazine cover was the animals at the One Size Fits all Store. I chose this image because when I was reading about the common core a lady made the comment that we are going towards a "One size fits all" with the common core. The more I thought about it the more I agreed with it. So I added it to get the viewer thinking about what that really means when related to the common core.
The media language techniques that I used were association, Humor, and Rhetorical questions.
The association was between the pumpkin and the viewer. At this time of year who does not love pumpkins? Most everyone does so what better way to associate with them then a pumpkin.
The humor comes from the picture with the animals at the One size fits all Store. Though we are not talking about size with the common core,we can still get a sense of what the message is. The last thing I used was a question. I questioned the viewer if One size really fits all. This gets the viewer thinking and hopefully wanting to read more about it.

Weekly Reading #9
" But as culture of sexuality keeps reaching down to younger and younger children, parents, teachers, and the general public wonder about media's influence on a young person's sense of personal and social identity." (pg. 105)
" But whether we like it or not, media messages shape peoples beliefs, attitudes and values." (pg. 113)
Media is very powerful for all society. Media sometimes helps us choose what to say, wear, be and follow. Many media messages send off negative vibes while there are very few positive vibes. As every type of media is becoming more available to younger generations, we see more sexuality being based off of media. When I was in high school you seen media have a little impact on the personal and social identity. Now, when I return I see more of it. They see things on the media that they like so they decide that it is now who they are. Media influences all of us in different ways. Some decide that we need to be like certain things, whether it be sexually or not. A lot of things on the media are very sexuality based. I strongly agree that media shapes people in many way. Sometimes we may not see but others we can see where it comes from. We learn from things on media, whether it be online,TV or radio we learn and sometimes we decide that it is a bigger part of us than we wanted it to be in the start. I also think that a lot of people are followers to things in the media. They don't want to be a leader but if they do they first follow something and then try to lead to friends and others around them.

Weekly Reading #8
" Today, every teacher needs to be a media composition teacher." (pg. 85)
" As a result, American elementary and secondary students do not have their full first amendment rights either in school or out of school."( pg. 96)
"A teacher who genuinely wants to support student voice may be at risk of being reprimanded or fired if his or her supervisor finds that students self-expression may harm the schools reputation or have other negative effects." (pg. 96)
I thought about these quotes strongly when I was reading this chapter. There are a lot of things, as educators, that we have to be careful about saying. Not only do the teachers have to watch about offending the students and the students beliefs and culture but the students have to watch what they say around other students and educators. I strongly feel that teachers who have the same belief and want to support their students bite their tongues just to save feelings of others. Sometimes it is so hard to see a student voice their opinion and not be able to support that student. This makes some students feel alone on certain issues. Not only do educators take risk but students who step up takes risk of hurting others around them. We need to have a time where students can speak their mind without being at risk for humiliation or being attacked because of what they say. Reading through these quotes I thought about how true these statements are. We are very limited to what we say or the students say. We are very limited in the world in and out of school, to what we can support and what is stepping on toes.

Note Card Confession
Below are the three quotes that inspired my note card confession.
" As much as some educators might like to think of themselves as transmitters of the official culture, we now must help students become active, critical interpreters of contemporary culture, helping them grasp the multiple realities and diverse forms of knowledge and experience that are circulating in this dense and ever-changing stew." ( Digital and Media Literacy pg.29)
" Students had opinions about the variety of sentences that their peers had written on their sticky notes." ( Digital and Media Literacy pg 31.)
" Listening and asking questions are the most important practices that activate critical thinking in the high school classroom." (Digital and Media Literacy pg 33.)
Addressing the Seven Elements of Digital Storytelling
Point of View: I will be telling my story from first person perspective.
Dramatic Question: My cousin taught me to fight.
Emotional Content: The emotional content of my digital story is the loss of my cousin to cancer at a young age.
Soundtrack: I'm not sure what music I will choose for my story yet but I'm sure it will go well with the story I am telling.
Economy: There will be very few words if any at all written on my story.
Pacing: I have my story to the pacing I want.

Brainstorming my Digital Story
1. A positive scene from my childhood was when I would get off of the school bus and my great grandma would be waiting on my sister and I. She would walk us up the hill to her house where she would have fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. We always spent our evenings with her. While she would make supper we would play barbies and school after we would eat our cookie/ice cream sandwiches. This event (though it isn't detailed) is very important to me because my great grandma is not able to cook and the old times were the best.
2. A negative scene from my childhood was when my step mother came to my great grandmas to pick my sister and I up to go to my dads. My dad is a truck driver so his hours are different daily and that day he was working and couldn't come get us. I remember she pulled into the drive way and came up to the door. My sister didn't mind going but I on the other hand hated going when my dad wasn't around. I cried and cried because I didn't want to go with her. My great grandma told her that if I didn't want to go I didn't have to. My stepmothers reply was that Rob was my dad and I had to go. By the end of the story I can say I was safely at my great grandmas. I thought this was a negative scene because throughout my whole childhood I was easily homesick when I was away from my grandma.
3.A memory from my teen-aged year was my very first cheerleading competition. I remember practicing for hours everyday after school between the months of August and November. It was competition day and we were all in the car ready to go. When we got to the school, we had help taking out our curlers. Then it was time for the practice time. Boy was I nervous. I did very well at this time it was like being in the gym at school. A few minutes later it was show time. I was so nervous that I forgot some of the routine and had to copy the girls in front of me. I was glad when it was over. It was a great first experience and I continued to cheer throughout my entire time in high school.
4.The most important memory that is in my mind today is my cousin Brian. Brian was my aunt and uncles son. He was a mail man and lived in New Jersey. Just a couple years ago he was diagnosed with leukemia. Throughout the years since being diagnosed he was at one time 100% cancer free but then it came back. After a year had passed he got remarried and they had a little girl. The last time I got to talk to him in person was the day of the baby shower. I had just gotten a new tattoo of the cancer ribbon to support him and he was so excited to see it. Last year in October his daughter turned one of the 9th and four days later he let go. We all miss him and I am sad that he left so soon but his life was well lived with the time he had on earth. This makes me know that we never know how long we have, so we need to live life to the fullest.
5. I feel that I answered this in number 4. The death of my cousin was a big turning point. Not just the death but when he was diagnosed it changed my life. I wanted to be healthier so that I could help him if I needed to. I became a bone morrow donator. Though I haven't been needed to donate I was ready when I was needed. I feel that it has made me change my attitude toward my family and the way I think about things. Family is so important to me and I never know how long I will have with each one of them.

Love/Hate Relationship Reflection on Visual Media
My love/hate relationship with visual media is different than the others. I love taking pictures which makes me love looking at pictures to read into the story. A picture can say 1000 words that no one can say. I love being able to visualize what is going on because I am a visual learner. There are so many things that a picture can do to be a visual media. Pictures are everywhere in your everyday life so the are important.
As for the hate part of the visual media is that sometimes it is hard to read into the picture. Also, pictures fade and sometimes they last forever while other times they don't. All the ads that are out there today use pictures to capture their attended audience. This can be bad because then the audience wants what is on that ad.

Reflecting on our Love/Hate Relationship with Media
Reading through all the four padlets, I could see that my peers and I think of media in a similar sense.
On the print media padlet I found it interesting that someone liked the feel of the book. When I read a book I don't really think about how it feels. I found this very interesting. Most of us have the same feeling about newspapers, they are not in our love relationship.
As for visual media, there are many examples in the world. The one thing that I took from this is that the visual media is great for visual learners. I learn better when I am seeing what is being taught. I thought that all the ideas that were said in the sound media padlet was very interesting. The different things that are recognized as sound media made me think. I never knew there were so many examples out there.
Throughout all the padlets the love/hate relationships of each peer were very similar. There are things that we can learn about them by reading through their responses.

Third Week : Activity # 3 Strength and Weeknesses of former Students
Vanessa Clay:
She has a great emotional content. A lot of people can connect with her story based on who she was talking about. Her grandmother; baking, her grandfather and then relating them to herself.
I thought this digital story was very good. I was able to relate to it. At the beginning of the story, I couldn't find the point of view but as I watched I seen that it was multi-dimensional.
Jared St. Brown:
With this digital story, I could not connect with the author. This story was well written and illustrated. I like how he used how they were different and made it into one story.
Amber Haller:
Her strength was keeping the viewer engaged. Having to read the next part of the story allowed the viewer to connect with her and also want to read what is next. I didn't feel there was a dramatic question in this digital story.

Life at a Funeral - a digital story by Siera Wilson
Point of view: The point of view in this digital story is to show the connection she has with changing her ways to be healthy. The voice you hear in this story is the authors.
Dramatic Question: Did she change her ways? Was she able to help her family change their ways?
Emotional Content: The emotional content in this digital story is the changes she made to become healthy and not die due to diabetes, obesity and other diseases. I relate to this because my granddad has diabetes and has had to change what he eats to stay healthy.

Reading helps the teacher and students communicate. While reading this article they became off subject but the teacher discussed the subject the children brought up. When you are teaching a lesson like this you have to be prepared to become off subject and to answer different question not completely based on what you had planed. Also, this allows the learners and teachers to use past experiences to talk more in depth rather then just staying on the subject and having a limited discussion.

Reading and Discussion #2
Filmmaking can be very beneficial for teens. Not only are they learning in the classroom but outside of the classroom as well. Allowing the students to take an assignment and make a film instead of just reading about it, gets them more involved and more interested in learning. This benefits the students outside of the classroom as well because they are getting to know their community and the people that surround them. Many of the students can become aware of their environment and the events that are taking place.
This allows for creativity and individuality. A student can show others their beliefs, values, and what is important to them through digital storytelling/ filmmaking. Learning on their own is another benefit. Taking technology and creating a piece of art that they have not created before can take time but while doing this they are learning how to merge it together, record voice, and make photos and words become a story.
With all of that being said, filmmaking benefits students in so many ways in and out of the classroom. The students can take what they learn and make it into something more than knowledge, they can make it into a digital story and allow people to see their understanding in a different way.
Digital Storytelling and Reel Works
Girl In Progress
1. I easily connected with this digital story. I liked how she used images of powerful women that are in history. I also liked the music that went along with the story. The story that the girl was telling was one that a lot of girls could connect with. I know I am a shy girl so connecting with this digital story was a big part in why I chose it as a favorite.
2. From this I learned that though you have insecurities you can be what you want in life. I also learned that there are people that have the same insecurities as you. It also showed me that making a digital story can encourage people and help them think of what is really happening in their lives.
3. I was surprised of how well the pictures flowed with the words of the author. I didn't realize that there was a way to make your own story and have the pictures flow like they did in this digital story.
4. The digital story allows young people to express their thoughts and feelings. These stories show what is happening in everyday life. The people who make these stories are real and have real thoughts and want to share with the world their experiences. I think it is a great way to help their self esteem because not everyone has the courage to look at someone and speak. By making a digital story they don't have to stand up in front of people and talk they can add images and music to help tell their story.
5. These digital stories show that the teens are engaged in their culture because they are showing views of their culture. Also, the teens are showing the world what is part of their culture and life.
6.Yes, these videos show a healthy respect of multiculturalism and diversity. All the teens that made a reel works video are different in many ways. After watching these videos it made me think about how everyone goes through the same thing no matter what culture, race, religion or class you come from.

BULLSHIT AND THE ART OF CRAP DETECTION
1. To what extent do you agree with Neil Postman?
I completely agree with Neil Postman. The best thing for our children of this time period is to be able to distinguish what message is behind the advertisement. This will help the children with critical thinking and it will also help them make decisions when they need to be made based on how they learn to perceive the messages.
2. Neil postman delivered this speech in 1969. How do you think he might feel about "the art of crap detection" now given recent advancements in digital technologies?
I feel that Neil Postman would feel that now with the 21st technology that some of the hidden agendas can be seen. Though there are new technologies, people are still exposed to a lot of bullshit. This gives our century the tools to help the community and students take different advertisements and show us what they see in the messages. We are able with the technology, to show people what advertisements leave out.
3. Reaction to the video
While watching Cameron Russell on the video, I had a lot of thoughts running through my head. Yes! Images tell a story different than the real story. As she talked about how girls were unsatisfied with their bodies I could relate because I use to be that way. Growing up all the images of the girls in the magazines seemed so happy and they were skinny. This made me think about how they made Barbie. Of course Barbie was tiny and didn't have acne, or skin spots, and she didn't even have a belly. As I have grown, I have learned that even though you see these images, the story behind them isn't what is being seen.
This video supports Neil Postman's concerns about "crap-detection" because it is telling the viewers the story past the image. It also supports Neil Postman because it is letting the viewing audience know that there is always an untold part to the messages that are seen.
It is important to not just teach media literacy but to also teach critical media literacy in and out of school because this is going to help the students understand the social environment and not just school. This will make them socially aware of what is going on around them through advertisement and TV. This gives the students an opportunity to reproduce the messages or advertisements in a way that people should see them.
"Critical media literacy not only teaches students to learn from media, to resist media manipulation, and to use media materials in constructive ways, but is also concerned with developing skills that will help create good citizens and that will make individuals more motivated and competent participants in social life (p.371, D.Kellner and J. Share)."
"The technologies of communication are becoming more and more accessible to young people and ordinary citizens, and can be used to promote education, democratic self-expression, and social progress (p.372, D.Kellner, and J. Share)."
"Teaching critical media literacy involves occupation of a site about the dichotomy of fandom and censor (p.372, D.Kellner and J. Share)."

Introduction
Hi everyone!
My name is Nissa Vance. I come from a small area in Pendleton county called Upper Tract. I lived there with my grandma for 20 years. I moved to Morgantown my junior year of college to live with my boyfriend and our dog peewee that we just adopted. In April, I became an aunt by surprise to a beautiful little girl. I am currently in the education program here at Fairmont State. This is my senior year and I plan to graduate next December.
I am currently working at storybook daycare in Morgantown. I love this job because I get to interact with children of the ages 2-4 throughout the day. Not only do I get to teach them but they teach me as well. It is a very benefiting job though it is tiring at times.
